Month In Review: August '09

Well, looking back at this month's reading stats I can tell that I went back to work! I completed just 9 books, 3 of which were audio titles. I guess it's a good thing I started listening to audiobooks during my daily commute, otherwise I would have only finished 6 books this month!

BOOKS READ BY RATING

5 stars: Fire by Kristin Cashore
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

4-1/2 stars:
Time of My Life by Allison Winn Scotch
8th Confession by James Patterson (audiobook)
My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent

4 stars:

Paranoia by Joseph Finder (audiobook)

3-1/2 stars:

Dreamland by Sarah Dessen
Wormwood by G. P. Taylor (audiobook)

3 stars:
Fade to Blue by Sean Beaudoin

AUGUST'S TOP PICK

This month it was actually an easy choice for me: Fire by Kristin Cashore! The story and characters were just so great, it was hard to put this book down!

READING CHALLENGE UPDATE

I haven't finished any challenges this month, but I did add one more book to my list of completed Sarah Dessen books. Just five more to go before the end of the year! I'm also just five books away from finishing the 100+ Reading Challenge, so I should be knocking that one out sometime in September if work doesn't keep me too busy!

CONTESTS

Today marks the last day of my contest celebrating 300 followers! (You've got time to enter until midnight tonight!) Since starting the contest my following has increased to 339 and I can only say thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to all of you who read and comment on my blog! Especially these days as I am not nearly as active in our community as I used to be, I'm so glad you all are sticking with me :-)

Oh, and keep your eye out for another contest down the road. In September I'm going to be giving away my ARC of a book I know many of you are dying to read!! :-)

Happy Reading in September!!

Sunday Salon (08.02.09): July '09 In Review

SundaySalonLogo
Happy Sunday, Saloners! Sorry I've been absent from the salon for awhile, other than a review here or there. There just hasn't been too much to write about this summer. I thought I'd use today's post to recap my month of July, which wasn't too shabby... 16 books read! I have to admit, I thought I'd read more because I was on vacation in between jobs the entire month, but it's amazing how busy one can keep even without a job!

BOOKS READ BY RATING

5 stars:
After The Fire by Belva Plain
City of Glass by Cassandra Clare
Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by J. K. Rowling

4-1/2 stars:
City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
The King's Rose by Alisa M. Libby
Graceling by Kristin Cashore
Holly's Inbox by Holly Denham (Bill Surie)
A Circle of Souls by Preetham Grandhi

4 stars:
7th Heaven by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
Keeping The Moon by Sarah Dessen
A Deadly Habit by Andrea Sisco
A Bride Most Begrudging by Deeanne Gist
The Lost Years of Merlin by T. A. Barron
The Time Machine by H. G. Wells

3-1/2 stars:
The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong

So nothing lower than 3-1/2 stars, not too shabby!! And this month's total page count was 6,075!

JULY'S TOP PICK

This is a tough one, because I read a lot of great books this month, but rather than have a few of my 5 star books share this honor, I am choosing a debut that really stood out: Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev.

READING CHALLENGE UPDATE

As you may have seen from one of yesterday's posts, I completed my first reading challenge, the Pages Read Challenge hosted by Kathrin at Secret Dreamworld of a Bookaholic! I had set my goal at 30,000 pages and little did I realize I'd be meeting it by the end of July! As for my other challenges, I have now read 3 of 9 books for the Sarah Dessen challenge (ends 12/31), since I added Keeping The Moon this month. I also managed to squeak in The Time Machine by H. G. Wells for the Classics Challenge (ends 10/31) before the month ended, so now I've finished 2 of 6 towards that challenge. And I have now read 86 books for the 100+ Challenge of 2009!

OTHER RANDOM MUSINGS & NEWS

I thought I ought to tell you all that you may not hear from me quite as much beginning tomorrow. I am starting a new job after having enjoyed five glorious weeks of vacation when my previous job ended. This new job will definitely keep me busier than my old job. I'm going to be the Assistant Store Manager at the Barnes & Noble at Georgia Tech, a college superstore in mid-town Atlanta. This is the company I worked with for five years before my most recent job, and that is even the store I came from.

One possible change to my reading habits may come from this--my commute is going to be a bit longer so I may be trying out and reviewing more audiobooks in the near future. I figure that will be a good way to maximize my time since I'm not sure how much time I'll be able to devote to my usual reading. I will try to keep up with my usual memes, but I think I likely won't be churning out as many reviews as I was for awhile. But who knows? Maybe I'll surprise myself and read more than I expect to!

And because there is actual a blog policy (that I had to sign) for B&N, I am supposed to say something to the effect that the views represented in this blog do not necessarily reflect the view of Barnes & Noble College Bookstores, Inc. whenever I mention them in a post. I'll have to get the exact verbiage when I can get a copy of the policy for myself!

Happy Sunday and happy reading, everyone!

Month In Review: June '09

June ended up surprising me--it was a better reading month than I thought it would be. I knew I would be busy with it being my last month at my job, but somehow I still managed to find time to read 15 books (and reviewed 16--one leftover from May)! For me, that's a good month. Here's how they all break down (this month I'm trying something different--listing the reviews by my star ratings, to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak):

5 stars:
T'aragam by Jack W. Regan
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
Fire Study by Maria V. Snyder

4-1/2 stars:
Boston Scream Pie by Rosemary and Larry Mild
Just Listen by Sarah Dessen
A Passion Denied by Julie Lessman

4 stars:
Why Shoot a Butler? by Georgette Heyer
Beyond This Moment by Tamera Alexander
Priceless Memories (Audiobook) by Bob Barker
Star of the Morning by Lynn Kurland
For Glory by Elisabeth Lee

3-1/2 stars:
Marked (House of Night #1) by P.C. and Kristin Cast

3 stars:
That Summer by Sarah Dessen
The Jewel of Gresham Green by Lawana Blackwell
The Fetch by Laura Whitcomb

2 stars:
The Manning Brides by Debbie Macomber

Did Not Finish: Yes, I did have one this month. I simply could not get into Swoon by Nina Malkin. The drug use and casual sex got on my nerves early on and I decided that I had too many other books I really wanted to read rather than waste my time on that one.

I don't know about all of you, but when I type up these posts, I find myself thinking, "Wow, I read that book this month?" I guess when you read so many books and time passes so quickly, you do start to lose track of just how much you've accomplished. That's one reason why I like to do these monthly recap posts. It puts it all into perspective for me, and I hope you find them interesting or helpful, as well!

T'aragam CoverJUNE'S TOP PICK

Last month, I know I cheated and just listed all my five star reviews because I had such an incredible reading month. This time around, however, I actually do have just one book that to me, stood out above the others... T'aragam by Jack W. Regan! While I enjoyed my other 5-star books, reading T'aragam was just a fun experience for me and it's the start of a promising fantasy series for Juvenile readers and up!

READING CHALLENGE UPDATE

I do need to be better about updating my challenge progress in these monthly reviews. The Weekly Geeks question about reading challenges has helped jump start me with this, and you can see my thoughts on reading challenges here.

100+ Challenge (hosted at J. Kaye's Book Blog) - I am now at 70 books read, and we're only halfway through the year! I wish I'd be able to keep that rate up for the remainder of the year, but I have a feeling my new job may not allow for as much reading time as I've had lately. We'll see!

Pages Read Challenge (hosted at Secret Dreamworld of a Bookaholic)- I think that somehow I won't have any trouble reaching my goal of 30,000 pages read by the end of the year... I'm already at 24,180! At least I'll have a better idea of what to plan for next year. :-)

2009 Classics Challenge (hosted at Trish's Reading Nook)- Here's where I need to get to work. I've only read one (that counts, if you visit my post you'll see where I goofed up earlier) and planned to read 6 total! I've got a few weeks off here before my new job, so I'm hoping to get at least 2 Classics read during that time.

Sarah Dessen Challenge (hosted at Em's Bookshelf)- I joined this challenge earlier in the month after reading my first ever Sarah Dessen book, Just Listen. So far I've read 2 of 9 necessary books to complete the challenge, which I've chosen to try to do by the end of the year. So far, so good!

So that basically sums up my month. You can view all of my June 2009 posts here if you want to revisit anything I haven't mentioned above!

Month In Review: May '09

Well, I've probably had the best reading month I've ever had in my entire life! Of course, I can't prove this because I never tracked my reading until starting this blog. :-) But I read 20 books in May!! I reviewed 19 of those, with the last review coming up tomorrow. In case you'd like to visit (or revisit) them, here are links to my May reviews:

Star Ratings Summary
5 stars: 8
4-1/2 stars: 3
4 stars: 7
1 star: 1

Wow! Clearly, not only did I have a good month in terms of the number of books, but also the quality of books (with one exception, of course). Of course, this makes my next section that much more difficult...

May's Top Picks

...Or maybe not. Because I'm going to take the easy way out and just name all eight of my five-star books as this month's picks!

Willow book cover Fragile Eternity book cover Murder in Mesopotamia book cover
Poison Study book cover Magic Study book cover
Shadow Kiss book cover Treasure Island book cover Foundling book cover

I am also now over halfway through with the 100+ Reading Challenge, at 55 books completed! And by reading Treasure Island, I finally put a dent in the Classics Challenge! I am almost two thirds of the way done with the Pages Read challenge goal of 30,000 pages that I had set for myself, so obviously I underestimated my capabilities there. I'll be curious to see how the year winds up at this rate!

I did some more blog tweaking to try to make it load better, hopefully everyone is experiencing faster load times and a little less clutter. Hooray for scrolling lists! And I recently discovered how to make a marquee list in Blogger, so I'll probably add that link to my Blogger Tips & Tricks Links post. It's not there yet, because I need to re-find it, but check back soon! And yes, there's a post all about how to make scrolling blogrolls and lists in Blogger, so be sure to check out my Blogger Tips & Tricks series :-)

So that was my May. Lots of great reading and continuing blog improvement! (Not to mention our first wedding anniversary on May 17th, which many of you have already seen the posts about!)

What about you? Did you have a good month of May?

The Sunday Salon (05.03.09) April '09 In Review

SundaySalon

Happy Sunday everyone! Hope everyone is having (or has had) a fabulous weekend! It's been a busy one for us, and I haven't had much time for reading, but I hope to be able to devote a few hours to The Woman In White (finally!!) by Wilkie Collins later today. I thought I'd use today's Salon post as a month-in-review for April, since I normally write week-in-review posts here, anyway. Hope nobody minds!!

April was a pretty good month for me, though I always wish I could read more books every week. In the end, I read and reviewed 11 books. If I'd been a reader in the Read-A-Thon, I have no doubt that total could have been a good bit higher! In case you missed them, here are links to my reviews from April:

The Host by Stephenie Meyer
Sin & Vengeance by CJ West
Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
Pretties by Scott Westerfeld
No Place For a Lady by Maggie Brendan
Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr
Deadly Exchange by Geoffrey M. Gluckman
The Crimes of Paris by Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler
The Dawning of Power by Brian Rathbone
A Passion Most Pure by Julie Lessman
Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr

Star Ratings Summary

5 stars: 3
4-1/2 stars: 3
4 stars: 3
3-1/2 stars: 1
2-1/2 stars: 1

April's Top Picks (2)

I couldn't limit myself to one top pick this month--as you see, I had three 5-star books, so in the end I'm going with two of those... And as I predicted last month, The Host by Stephenie Meyer is one of them! My second top pick is Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr!

The Host cover Ink Exchange cover

April was also a month of milestones... Most recently, as you know from my current contest, I reached 100 followers this week, which was very exciting for me! If you haven't already, go to my contest post and enter to win a $20 Amazon gift card! I had to do something to thank all of you for reading my blog and leaving encouraging comments! In other milestones, earlier in the month I wrote my 100th post, and had both 100 followers on Feedburner and Twitter. With the help of the Read-A-Thon, my Twitter follower count is now over 300, holy cow!! In other interesting stats, I had 1,999 visits to my blog in the month of April--just shy of the 2,000 mark!

I also ran a series of posts with Blogger Tips & Tricks, which I am happy to know that so many of you found helpful! I do realize I owe you all one more post--a link wrap-up of helpful sites. I'll try to get that up in the next couple of days!

And for the first time in several years, I went to a book signing last Sunday, as you might remember from my Salon post and pictures. :-) I'm now going to make it a point to go to as many book signings as my schedule will allow! The next one I know I'm hope to make it to is Julie Lessman's signing at the Mall of Georgia in June!

Now for something completely unrelated except for the fact it occurred on the last day of April... I got a new haircut, shorter and more layered, with side-sweeping bangs:

March '09 In Review

Welcome to my first month-in-review post! Since I started my blog halfway through February, I didn't bother with a re-cap last month, and I was still getting the hang of things as it was. Now I feel settled into this great community of book bloggers, into which I really feel like I was welcomed with open arms. Thank you to everyone who is reading this for that!! On a personal level, this month has not been one of my best, but I do feel that I got a lot of books read and reviewed despite it all!

Books read and reviewed (15):

Star Ratings Summary:

5 stars: 1
4-1/2 stars: 4
4 stars: 4
3-1/2 stars: 3
3 stars: 2
2 stars: 1
1-1/2 stars: 1

Clearly I had an interesting mix of books, as far as my overall reading enjoyment was concerned. :-)

Hunger Games coverMarch's Top Pick

Drumroll, please... The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins! Definitely the best book I've read so far in '09. Great story, great writing, great characters... I could go on and on, but you're better off just taking a look at my review if you haven't already. (A sneak preview into April: The Host by Stephenie Meyer is looking like another "best book I've read in '09" pick...)

Adoration of Jenna Fox coverMarch's Most Thought-Provoking Title:

Definitely The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson. The Hunger Games was a close second, but the heavy themes of bioethics and morality in the story about Jenna and her family's sacrifices and choices made in order to keep her "alive" kept me thinking about this book long after I had finished it.

MysteryMondaysLogoThe Birth of Mystery Mondays

I apologize again if I'm stealing anyone else's idea of letting Mondays have a mystery theme, but I haven't seen anything out there yet! I've mainly stuck to reviews with Mystery Mondays, but I'm hoping to grow it into something that is more paticpatory for all of you out there reading my blog. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, please let me know! I'm currently working up several poll question ideas, among other things. I'll likely do a giveaway every once and awhile, too :-)

Blog Awards:

I truly appreciate my first two blogging awards, both received this month. It means so much to me that others out there enjoy my blog. I certainly enjoy sharing it with all of you!

Proximidade Award
Debbie from Wrighty's Reads gave me my first award, the Proximade Award!

Zombie Chicken award
Mishel from Mis(h)takes recently gave me the coolest award ever, the Zombie Chicken Award!

You should definitely check out both of their blogs and see why they're award-winners, too!

Blog Improvement:

I've finally settled on what I plan to keep as the look and feel of my blog! Many of the changes have just been made in the last week and I feel really happy about all that I've accomplished. There is still much I want to tweak, but I've already made most of the biggest changes I felt were necessary, including a review index, a link exchange policy, and header links for important information. I also worked hard to get myself listed in various search engines and blog directories, hoping to draw as many people to my blog as I can. I love sharing books and my thoughts on them with everyone and learning as much as I can from everyone else's blogs!! (Have you seen how long my TBR/Wish List has gotten?!) All this work has also led me to creating a grab button for Melissa's Bookshelf--check it out:

Melissa's Bookshelf

Please feel free to use it on your site, if you'd like! I'm getting ready to work on a button area for all of your site buttons, as well!
